Here we are at the end of February 2018 and the temps for this week (2/19/18-2/25/18) has been warmer than usual. Birds have been chirping and you hear the continual roaring of Harley Davidson on the roads. This wonderful weather has been somewhat refreshing considering the temps were cold just a couple of weeks ago. This beautiful weather has gotten me excited for the temperatures that are to come. Yes I know cold weather is going to come back to visit us, but it is always nice to get out of the house and enjoy some sun.
With the warm temperatures comes premature germination of spring bulbs. If we by some chance have another warm week to go along with the more than 3 inches of rain expected, we are sure to have tulips, daffodils, and other perennials sprouting in the near future. This can confuse us, especially if it snows again. We think automatically that our plants are going to die from early sprouting and late snow. This is not always the case. Some plants can survive a late snow. Sometimes it is important to cover up any sprouting with a sheet or buckets to prevent frost damage. A lot of shrubs and hardy plants will recover even though they have mild damage. In these situations it is important to have a mulch protection barrier. Mulch helps keep in the temperatures on the root systems. This is just another benefit of annual mulching.
As you wake up and look outside and see the sunshine, remember there is still a chance for more winter weather. You can be excited knowing that spring is only a month away and we can enjoy the beautiful Ohio weather. Keep your eyes to the future because spring and Easter are right around the corner.
